BHC artists win awards in 2023 Student Art Exhibition

Art faculty members Terrance Gray and Annie Oldenburg, juror Terry Rathje, and BHC Student Art Exhibition winners Alan Hernandez-Valdez, Jae珊瑚, 佐伊彼得森, Shakira’a Gbenyo, Grace Doucette and Mya Diabira with her Best in Show oil painting.

Six Black Hawk College students recently were honored for their artistic talent in the annual Student Art Exhibition.

The juried competition garnered a record-setting 72 entries with 29 pieces selected for the show by jurors Heidi Hernandez and Terry Rathje.

Mya Diabira of Bettendorf won Best in Show for her untitled oil painting.

The other winners are:

  • Second place – Grace Doucette of Coal Valley – “Sheep in the Fields” – acrylic paint, collage
  • Third place – Grace Doucette of Coal Valley – “Oasis” – charcoal
  • Honorable mentions –
    • Jae珊瑚 of Colona – “URDUJA of PANGASINAN: The Indomitable Spirit” – digital art
    • Shakira’a Gbenyo of Milan – “Illusion of Calm” – charcoal
    • Alan Hernandez-Valdez of Moline – “Beneath the Surface” – carving foam and acrylic paint
    • 佐伊彼得森 of Atkinson – “Dissociate” – acrylic painting
